Description

Iron Studies provide a comprehensive picture of your body’s iron stores and transport, making it the definitive way to confirm iron deficiency or iron overload.

About the Iron Studies / Ferritin

This panel typically measures ferritin (your stored iron), serum iron, transferrin or total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation. Together these reveal whether fatigue, hair loss, breathlessness or anaemia are due to low iron, and can also detect iron overload. Ferritin in particular is one of the earliest and most sensitive markers of iron deficiency, often falling before anaemia develops.

Preparation and turnaround

A venous blood sample is required, and morning testing after an overnight fast is often preferred for the most consistent iron reading; our team will advise when you book. Results are usually available within one to two working days. Because ferritin can also rise with inflammation, results are best interpreted by a doctor alongside an FBC or CRP.

Frequently asked questions

Should I fast before iron studies?

A morning sample after fasting is generally preferred, as iron levels vary through the day. We will confirm the recommended preparation when you book.

What is ferritin?

Ferritin reflects the amount of iron stored in your body. A low level is one of the earliest signs of iron deficiency, often before anaemia appears.

Can this test detect too much iron?

Yes. Iron studies can identify iron overload as well as deficiency, which is important for conditions such as haemochromatosis.
